California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Born in New York City in 1829, Wheelock earned law and divinity degrees from Harvard University prior to serving with the New Hampshire volunteers during the Civil War. While on active duty in New Orleans, he worked for the Board of Education for Freedmen, Department of the Gulf.
